The construction of Kalka shimla railway started in 1898. The Railway line was bulit on 2 ft (610 mm) with cost of Rs 86,78,500.On November 1903 line was first opened for the general public. In 1906 line was converted into 2 ft 6 in (762 mm).
There are 864 bridges. 919 curves, 103 tunnels( but now 102) 107 tunnels were there at the time of construction. Barog Tunnel is the longest on the entire section,which is 1143 m long.This Tunnel is named after colonel Barog who was a British engineer. while executing the work of the tunnel, He found that the ends of tunnel does not meet.The digging was being done from both sides. Colonel Barog felt frustrated and depressed committed suicide.Then a local Babu Bhalku helped the Britisher, he guided them and the alignment to the Barog tunnel was found.
Top Speed of the section is 25 km/h. Railmotor car is the fastest of all. You can reach shimla by Rail motor car in 4:30 hours. and other express/mail Trains take around 5 hours.
Shimla is the highest station on the entire section present at a height of 2,076 meters , kalka is at 656 meters. Now Himachal Pradesh is the only State to have narrow gauge connectivity with its State capital. early Jaipur (RAJASTHAN) And Raipur (chattisgarh) were also connected through these little toy trains.
On 8th july 2008 UNESCO Declared kalka shimla railway a world Heritage site.This Railway line was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records as the greatest narrow gauge engineering achievement in India.
